I had finally decided to build a Hackintosh that I would actually use rather than just tinker with.
I chose to build the system with these components since I already owned them. I was really determined to make things work with this motherboard since I didn't want to have to purchase another one.
After spending days of researching whether or not this board would work this thread helped me make up my mind http://www.tonymacx86.com/user-builds/63786-habergowds-little-beast-intel-dh55tc-i5-760-hd6850.html
To get started I set a few known BIOS settings. Storage controller to ACHI and HPET enabled. Also, you need to have the monitor connected to the HDMI port.
I started by doing a basic install of Snow Leopard 10.6.3. In order to get the installation accomplished I had to use iBoot with the following startup options: busratio=22 and GraphicsEnabler=No
After the installation of 10.6.3 was complete I needed to use iBoot with the PCIRootUID=1 parameter to get the system to boot from the hard drive.
Since my graphics card and network adapter were working I didn't even bother to go any further with the Snow Leopard install. I logged into the App Store and purchased Mountain Lion and created a UniBeast USB flash drive installer. I had to download and install the Apple Installer Update 1.0 in order to get the UniBeast tool to work correctly.
After that I pretty much followed the install notes from this thread http://www.tonymacx86.com/user-builds/63786-habergowds-little-beast-intel-dh55tc-i5-760-hd6850.html . Since the DSDT creation in this thread is frowned upon you'll have to find some other way to create the DSDT. I've searched here and every other Hackintosh site I could find, none of them had a better way or an official DSDT for this motherboard. If you find one, please share it. I'd love know another way.
When booting from my Mountain Lion USB drive I had to use PCIRootUID=0 to be able to get through the initial installation.
After the installation I performed the following MultiBeast installation:
First I turned off all automatic updates. Then I changed the security settings to allow installation from anywhere.
Run MultiBeast with the following selected
-Drivers, audio, universal, latest VoodooHDA (Be sure to dump the AppleHDA.kext before rebooting)
-Drivers, Disk, IOAHCIBlockStorageInjector
-Drivers, Network, hnak's AppleIntelE1000e Ethernet
After Multibeast completed I applied the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext that I found here: Patched AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext for 10.8 I know this can now be applied from Multibeast but I went by the instructions in the thread I mentioned earlier.
I held my breath and restarted the computer. Much to my surprise it booted up without any intervention on my part. I had full video support (at least as far as I could tell), network and sound. Also, restart and shutdown worked correctly.
Now for the power management, that does not work. I can put the monitor to sleep and successfully wake it up from keyboard or mouse but if I put the system to sleep it crashes and then I have to press the restart button or force the power off. Since I really have no need for power management I disabled everything except for turning the monitor off. No sleep. No turning off the hard drive. No allowing the power button to put the system to sleep.
I also experienced a couple of kernel panics when rebooting. I was able to boot the system into safe mode with the -x switch and through some troubleshooting I found that the panic was caused by the VoodooHDA drivers included with MultiBeast. I downloaded an updated version and applied them manually. The only thing that still has me perplexed is how low the volume is.
UPDATE
Volume is now working correctly. I had tried several kext edits on the VoodooHDA info.plist without any success and then I dropped back to installing an older version from MultiBeast. Version 2.72 to be exact. After that the volume controls worked correctly and the output was actually overdriving the cheap pair of speakers I was using. I turned the volume down just enough to prevent the distortion
Now that the build is complete I have been able to use the DVI port on the graphics controller without any more issues. I haven't tested dual monitor support.
I've watched videos on YouTube and iTunes and installed Microsoft Office 2011 and iLife 2011. All of the applications work.
The system has now been running for about 36 hours. Reboot and shutdown still work correctly. Waking the monitor is not an issue. No more kernel panics.
Here are some pictures of the running OS
So that's it.
