i tried both the fn+f5 & f6 and nothing happened. i have the service sp3 installed.

Is it an internal mini-PCI adapter?
Do you see the WLAN adapter in Wndows Device Manager?

And see if there are any yellow markers on any of your componants in there. If there are then just right click on them and choose 'Update drivers'. Is there any switch on the front of your machine to enable/disable Wifi?

thanks i think i found the problem.. i checked the device manager and there was no wireless adapter listed. i am assuming this did not come with a wireless card preinstalled. so i guess i have to purchase one and install it correct?

most IBM laptops have a Mini-PCI slot in the bottom, and have the antenna cables already in the machine. You just pop in the adapter, connect the two antenna wires, and you're all set.
Personally, I've had poor results with some USB wiFi adapters, so a PC-Card wifi adapter would be my second choice after a mini-pci. The mini-PCI is nice since it's built-in, so it cannot be lost or damaged.
If the R40 is one of the ones that tries to force you to use an IBM mini-pci adapter (which is a Cisco card) there is a program to hack the bios called No-1802.
